Heart Health is Significantly Worsening in Middle-Aged Adults

Cardiovascular risk factors have significantly increased for middle-aged adults over the last decade or so, according to recent research. Deaths from heart disease have also been increasing – specifically among middle-aged adults – reversing a trend that saw them steadily decline.

The study analyzed health data from over 20,000 middle-aged adults (aged 40-64 years) who participated in a nationally representative health survey from 1999 to 2020. Researchers evaluated trends in risk factors for heart disease as well as other social factors that might affect heart health.

Overall, heart disease risk factors and mortality increased for middle-aged adults in general but lower-income adults were the most affected. They experienced higher rates of hypertension, diabetes, and cigarette use over the past 2 decades, while high-income adults had a rise in diabetes and obesity.

“The onset of cardiovascular risk factors earlier in life increases the lifetime risk of developing cardiovascular disease and experiencing life-threatening cardiovascular events,” said Rishi K. Wadhera, MD, study author. “Our study highlights a smoldering cardiovascular health crisis among the younger segment of the U.S. population that warrants urgent…responses.”

Traffic Pollution Raises Blood Pressure, Filtration Can Help

Inhaling traffic-related air pollution while sitting in a car could raise diastolic blood pressure by as much as 4.7 mm Hg and systolic blood pressure by as much as 4.5 mm Hg, a new study has found. The changes in blood pressure occurred rapidly, peaking within 1 hour, and lasted 24 hours.

Traffic-related air pollution is already considered a risk factor for heart disease and is especially concerning as a health hazard because work commute times in the U.S. have increased, reaching an average of about 27 minutes in 2019.

The study was a small one and involved 16 adults aged 22-45. To test the effects of traffic pollution, participants were driven through traffic in Seattle, Washington, and their blood pressure was monitored before, during, and after the drive.

Though driving through traffic in a car without filtration was associated with an acute increase in blood pressure, completing the same drive in a vehicle with a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter installed was not found to raise blood pressure, suggesting a protective effect against traffic-related pollution.

6 Key Ways to Keep Your Bladder Healthy

Bladder problems are more likely to appear the older you get, but they are not an inevitable part of the aging process. Staying well hydrated is key for bladder health, although you may want to limit caffeinated beverages, carbonated beverages, and citrus juices, which are not “bad” but can irritate the bladder. Also, don’t hold urine for too long, and try to fully empty your bladder when you pee. Exercises that strengthen and/or relax the pelvic floor can also help prevent or improve bladder issues. (More)

Replacing Animal-Based Foods With Plants Is a Recipe for Weight Loss

More and more research is demonstrating that swapping out animal-based foods for plant-based ones is a great move for overall health. A new study provides even more confirmation for this by finding that participants who followed a vegan diet with no calorie limitations lost an average of 13 pounds over the course of 16 weeks. The control group – who did not change their diet – did not lose any weight at all. (More)

Phthalate Exposure May Make It Harder to Get Pregnant

Phthalates are a group of plasticizing chemicals commonly found in many household products, including shampoo, makeup, vinyl flooring, and medical devices. They are already linked to a number of negative health effects, particularly hormone disruption. Some new research now indicates that exposure to phthalates in the household could be linked to a lower probability of getting pregnant and also raises levels of inflammation in the body. (More)

A Diverse Gut Microbiome is Essential to Block Harmful Pathogens

The human gut is home to hundreds of different bacterial species and other microbes that are collectively referred to as the gut microbiome. One role the gut microbiome plays is to help protect against invading pathogens. Interestingly, a new study has found that individual bacteria don’t appear to be very protective against pathogens, but putting them in communities of 50 or more species increases their effectiveness 1,000 fold, indicating that diversity is key for a well-functioning microbiome.
